In the last ten years of my work, I would have spent more than thirty per cent of my time training people in my company. It is a very important job and certainly not an easy one at that. The people whom you need to train come in various colors and shades. Even then, it becomes a bore once you have repeated the same topic twice or thrice. You wish you would not do the same topic again and again!
One of the methods we adopted early on was to have my talk recorded and played back when ever the students or the participants were free. There were one or two face to face sittings, when all the doubts that they had were clarified. But still, most of the questions that the participants asked were more or less a repeat of what ever I had said in those video recordings. I always thought that there should be something more powerful than just video recordings.
When we used online meetings for our training purposes, I started feeling the difference and the power of such meetings and training programs. Typically, what happens was this:
A training program was conducted by me or other trainers. This training program is recorded by the software itself. And this is available to the student or the participant of the online training, at any point in time he or she wants to review it. This makes the training program an asynchronous program.
What is the advantage of such an asynchronous program? I found a drop of more than eighty per cent of repeat questions. They did not come back with those questions for which I had already answered in the training program. Though this meant the participants were reading over and over again or going through the presentation a multiple number of times, it also meant that the students have started learning the entire program and are appreciating it.
This was something wonderful! What is more interesting is the fact that you can come back to the training session at any time and indicate to the students that what they are doing is not as per my instruction to you. Go back and refer my talk! It is convenient for the trainer as well as for the trainee. Why would any one say no to this process that has all the recordings done online and available to the trainees?
