Yes, you’ve got the latest technology. And, yes, you’ve hired an all-star team. But, what can you do to positively insure that your leadership vision fuels your entire organization?
The art and practice of telling stories is the fastest and most effective way to strengthen your corporate culture.
Everyone knows that a good story has certain components. But many leaders, managers and project managers don’t know these elements. Or how to use them effectively. That’s why it’s so helpful to use a structural system known as a Storyboard.
With a Storyboard, you can quickly help technical leaders, experts and engineers step into the minds of their audience. With this step-by-step blueprint, any subject matter expert can plan and deliver a compelling story. The formula makes it easy to eliminate excess and simplify key message points.
If you’ve sat in any audience and listened to a guest professor, industry expert or perhaps even a CEO, you know how the problem. It is challenging to listen. You might think to yourself, as I have, “Hey, I’m educated… but is this guy speaking English? I haven’t got a clue what he is saying.”
By the way, you are not alone. Far too many participants sit in way too many audiences listening to speeches, presentations and sales pitches. But never getting ‘the story.’ You know as a participant, just how painful this can be.
Of course, you may also know the pain from the perspective of the presenter. The glazed looks. The confused stares. The frequent glances at the clock. And then, the hurried race to the door.
You know how awful this feels. When your leadership story doesn’t hit the mark.
English isn’t my first language. When I came to the States, I was homeless. I had $35 dollars, no family, and very rusty English skills. I spent most of my money on a bottle of Vodka and some potato chips. Fortunately, a kind person let me sleep in his backyard.
I was homeless but I had faith in my ability to tell stories. The very next day, I started going door to door. I connected with people. I told them my story. I learned how to solve their problems. And guess what? I got work.
So, if I can do it - with no formal storytelling training, in my second language - I know you can do it too.
But enough about me.
This is all about you. From this moment forward, I want to ask you to make a different choice. Make a decision to not be one of those rambling, disconnected leaders. Make a firm vow to learn how to tell stories. Resolve to not ‘go over the head’ of participants in your audience. Ever again.
Once you make this decision, you’ll find the tools, methods and techniques are readily available. In fact, you’ll find it’s easy to plan a compelling story, on any topic.
I know this is a bold statement. How can I be so certain?
I have taught storyboarding, message planning and presentation storyboarding to thousands of people. I’ve helped them capture fascinating stories - directly out of their own experience and expertise.
And many of these people had no natural ability to tell stories. None at all. In fact, they were often self-described introverts, clueless about what would engage their audience.
Plus, many of these people had tough topics to present. Data and details that could make any audience go bug-eyed. Software. Accounting. Engineering. Corporate strategy. You can imagine. Not what most people would consider hot and juicy topics.
So, if they can learn it, you can learn it. It’s that simple.
There’s an old proverb, A great journey begins with the first step.
